Monsters
As a class we read one of my favorite children's books, Leonardo the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems. In this story, Leonardo is terrible at being a monster because he can't scare anyone. When Leonardo finds one unsuspecting boy that he is able to scare he finds that he would rather be his friend.
The students get to create their own monsters. Their monsters could be scary, funny, sad, happy, silly, etc... There are limitless possibilities to be creative with their monsters. I have them start off by tracing their shoe to get the shape of the monster's body. Then, we add the features such as eyes, nose, mouths, spikes, tails, wings, etc...
I also have the students think about where they want their monster to live and paint a background. It is SO fun to see the creativity that comes out in this project!
