Cave Drawings
We read as a class "The Cave Painter of Lascaux" by Roberta Angeletti. We also explored the actual cave paintings on the Caves of Lascaux website. We talk together about how and why the ancient peoples painted the walls of caves as they did. To make this project and had the students create the "cave wall" the first class period. We crumpled up white construction paper, flattened it out, and then rubbed brown or gray chalk across it. After covering it lightly with chalk, I had the students paint water over top of the chalk (to help it stick down better and get into the wrinkles). The next art class we used black, brown, and white oil pastels to to draw prehistoric creatures on our cave walls.
